What is Motherboard

It is not the same as CPU where all the calculations are done. But the motherboard simply organizes these calculations and their results. While it itself does not hold a lot of power, nothing can work in a computer without the motherboard, which is why it is considered so important.

If understood in more simple words, motherboard is a type of electronic circuit board. Which works to connect the parts of the computer such as CPU, RAM, Printer, Mouse, Scanner, Graphic card etc. and maintains the power supply in them so that all the parts work correctly. Basically it acts as a HUB.

What does the motherboard do or its functions

The main purpose of the motherboard is to move power around and provide a central location. where all components can communicate with each other.

By itself, your motherboard does not affect the display at all. However, depending on the chipset, your motherboard may enable higher performance when paired with other hardware.

Another important function of the motherboard is to load your operating system. A firmware chip on the motherboard stores the Basic Input/Output System (BIOS). This very lightweight application is the first thing your computer loads. Which allows it to read data from your hard drive and eventually load your operating system.

The functionality of the motherboard is largely determined by the chipset. A motherboard’s chipset is responsible for handling the communication between the various components and motherboards come from CPU manufacturers.

You will usually see CPU manufacturers releasing new chipsets with new generation processors. This is because the chipset is where most motherboard innovation happens. Thereby users can use more RAM and make use of features like PCIe 4.0 among other things

Motherboards also handle a logistical constraint in building a computer. The layout of the motherboard deliberately places critical power distribution and communication parts close to the components that require them.

Your CPU, for example, receives power through the motherboard. However, a Voltage Regulator Module (VRM) is installed between the power connection and the processor to maintain constant power to the motherboard.

There are many different motherboard designs and form factors that have been updated over the years for different devices and evolving technology.

However, all motherboards have some things in common. They all have circuits to synergic computer processes and a heat sink to absorb and redirect heat, to keep the motherboard cool during use. Most also have a secondary source of power.

When you look at any motherboard, the primary thing you will notice is that it has a lot of slots and connections. Since everything is rooted through the motherboard. Therefore it requires physical contact with almost all computer components. Including Main power, CPU, RAM slot, USB, PCIe, Video and Sound card etc.

Over time the ports on the motherboard change depending on the demands of the current technology. This is why older motherboards may have multiple idle ports for obsolete connections.

In most cases, they are peripheral ports. Motherboard handles the internal connection like your RAM and CPU. But it also handles external connections like USB and thunderbolt

Additionally motherboards provide networking ports (via Ethernet, Wi-Fi) or both and usually provide video connections if your processor has on-board graphics.

Connections have changed and customized over time. But the purpose of the motherboard remains the same. It is a hub for your PC. Everything that connects to your computer is connected to the motherboard in some way or the other. Even the USB ports on the front of your computer case connect directly to the motherboard

History of motherboard

Modern motherboards were invented long after the first computers. Early computers tended to be more straightforward machines. Without the need to coordinate multiple processes at once, there was not much demand for mass-produced motherboards before they took off in the consumer market.

However, this changed in 1981 when IBM released its personal computer. This is the reason why laptops and desktops are called PCs. These computers needed a way for consumers to regulate their activity.

In response, IBM developed the first motherboard to do so, a computer chip that took care of all the details while users carried out their digital tasks.

At first this component was called the planner and at the beginning of its creation it went through several additional names, with the term motherboard becoming the most popular as the circuit board essentially served as the mother for all other computer components. As such, this is why an extension to a motherboard is sometimes referred to as a databoard.
