What is Computer Memory

2 What is Primary Memory?

Primary Memory is also called Main Memory and Temporary Memory (Volatile Memory). This memory is part of the CPU. From where the CPU receives data and instructions. And keep it after processing.

The instructions and data of the work currently being performed are stored in the primary memory. This memory is temporary. After the work is over, the stored data is automatically deleted and the data for the next task is stored. This is a continuous process. Even if the computer is shut down, all the data gets deleted.

There are two types of primary memory.

3 What is Secondary Memory?

It is also known as External (Extra) and Non-Volatile Memory. It is used to store data permanently. The data stored in this memory is always safe. Which can be accessed by the user and computer at any time. (Computer Memory)

Secondary memory is not a part of CPU. Its data first goes to the main memory, only after that the CPU can use it. Its storage capacity is very high. For example, Hard Disks, CD, DVD, Pan Drives etc.

Features of Secondary Memory

  • This is a permanent memory.
  • Data is stored forever.
  • Its speed is a little less.
  • Store capacity is very high.
  • The data is saved even when the work is over or the computer is turned off.

Data is stored in the form of 0 and 1 in computer memory. These two numbers are called Binary Digits and Bits. Each digit represents one bit. Therefore the smallest unit of computer memory is Bit. (Computer Memory)

A set of these Binary Digits is made to represent the small characters of the memory. It starts with 8 Digits or 8 Bits (eg; 10011001). These 8 Bits are equal to 1 Byte.

4 Bit = 1 Nibble
2 Nibble and 8 Bit = 1 Byte

Bit is represented by a small “b” in English. And Byte is represented by the big “B” of English. like; You cannot consider 200 Mbps as equal to 200 MBps. Because 200 Mbps means 200 Mega Bits Per Second. And another 200 MBps means 200 Mega Byte Per Second. (Computer Memory)
