What is a Speaker?

A speaker is a computer hardware output device that connects to a computer and uses it to hear sound.
Some specialized speakers are designed to connect to a computer.
While other speakers can be connected to any device.
The sound signals emitted from a computer speaker are generated by the computer’s sound card.
IBM developed its first internal computer in 1981, but its sound quality was poor.
In earlier monitors, speakers were usually placed on the bottom right, bottom left, or on the front of the monitor. However, nowadays, speakers are being placed on the left and right sides of monitors.

How do speakers work?

A speaker converts electromagnetic waves into sound waves. It receives input from a computer or audio receiver.
Input can be of two types: analog or digital. An analog speaker can easily convert analog electromagnetic waves into sound waves.
However, a digital speaker converts a digital signal into an analog signal, which then produces analog sound waves. Frequency measures the fluctuations in the sound produced by the speaker.
In “What is a Speaker,” you learned that earlier computers had internal speakers. However, you’ll learn about the need for external speakers.

What is the need for external speakers?

These days, laptops, smartphones, and other devices come with built-in speakers. So, you don’t need an external speaker.
But when you need loud sound or ambient sound, you can use one.
External speakers produce high-quality sound that resonates loudly around us.
We can connect them to a computer or other device.
The first external speaker was invented by Abinavan Puratchi Das in 1991.
Now you know very well what a speaker is. Next, it is important for you to know how many types of speakers there are.

Types of speakers – Subwoofers

Subwoofers are speakers that produce very low-frequency sound. Their range is between 20 and 200 Hz.
Some desktop speaker systems today come with a subwoofer.
It is used in cars or home theaters.

Studio Monitors

Studio monitors are a type of speaker known for their ability to clearly reproduce both vocals and music.
They are used for listening to and playing music.
There are two types: powered and unpowered studio monitors.

Loudspeakers

Loudspeakers are household speakers. In the past, they were the only way to receive sound from radios, televisions, and stereos. Loudspeakers are a staple in the lives of older generations.
Loudspeakers typically consist of a woofer, a mid-range speaker, and a tweeter, producing a full range of sound.

This eliminates the need to purchase multiple separate speakers.
These are typically used for stage performances or karaoke, requiring a large amount of space to fit.
But these days, they also come in smaller sizes,
which can fit in your pocket, and produce good quality sound.

Floor Standing Speakers

This type of speaker can be placed on the floor. It stands approximately 4 feet tall. These speakers are clearly visible in the room they are placed in. Space is required for their placement.

Bookshelf Speaker

Another type of speaker is a bookshelf speaker, also known as a home theater speaker. These are medium-sized speakers.
This type of speaker is placed on either side of a television or around a room.
These speakers are approximately 5 inches tall and have two speakers: a mid-range speaker and a tweeter.
Like floor-standing speakers, they require an amplifier and receiver.

Central Channel Speakers

Speaking of central channel speakers, these speakers offer similar quality to studio monitors. These speakers are placed above or in front of the television. However, the need for a center speaker isn’t as great.

In-Wall/In-Ceiling Speakers

In-wall or in-ceiling speakers can be difficult to install, as they aren’t budget-friendly.
But the feeling of moving from room to room with music surrounding you can be a truly rewarding experience.
In-wall ceiling speakers are great for homes because they allow wiring through the ceiling and are built into the wall.
Most of these speakers come with a cover to conceal them flush. They provide good quality sound in a sitting area.

On-Wall Speakers

The advantage of an on-wall speaker is that you can avoid drilling a large hole in your ceiling or wall and can fit it anywhere you want.
You can use an on-wall speaker instead of a floor-standing speaker because it doesn’t need to be placed on the floor, allowing you to use it in a smaller space.
It’s easy to install, but hiding the wires can be tricky. These speakers come in a variety of designs and colors, allowing them to match your wall color.
These are unpowered speakers, so they require an amplifier and receiver to plug in.

Bluetooth Speakers

What is a speaker ? The most commonly used speaker these days is the Bluetooth speaker, which is a wireless technology.
It can be connected to any audio device and is a portable device that provides high-quality sound.
Some Bluetooth speakers can be plugged into an outlet, allowing you to charge the speaker wirelessly while using it. They come in different sizes and colors.

Outdoor Speakers

Outdoor speakers are weatherproof speakers. These speaker boxes are designed to withstand heat and humidity. You can purchase these speakers as a system or as a single speaker.
But it depends on your needs. Some systems come with a subwoofer and multiple mid-range tweeters to cover the entire yard or patio.
