What is server

A server is a computer system that provides (client) resources, data, services, or programs to other systems in the network.

Let us understand this in theory, then whenever computers share any kind of resource with client machines, then we can consider them as servers. By the way, there are many types of servers, which include web servers, mail servers, and virtual servers. These are the most important of all.

What are the types of servers

By the way, according to the needs of the new era, many types of servers are available.

A server is a device or computer in a network that performs the task of supervising network resources.

For example, a file server is such a storage device that only serves to store files.

These servers help the user to save files in the network. A server cannot perform any other task except its basic server task. On the other hand, if you are using a multiprocessing operating system, then a single system can run many programs at a time.

A server platform is used like an operating system.

Servers are of different types and also provide different services.

1 Web Server

Web servers store the data of all the websites on the internet and this server is connected to the web browser, so whenever a user requests to view a website from the web browser, then this browser is connected to the web server. By connecting, the data of the website is sent to the user’s device.

2 Email Server

Email Server helps in sending and receiving messages and stores all the details and messages of the users’ account on the server.

3 File Server

File server helps in transferring files through the network. File server stores and manages all the files in a computer and on request of the user sends the copy of the file to his computer. File server is used on the local network.

4 Application Server

Application Servers keep a large amount of computing territory between database servers and end users, and which are regularly bonded together.

Two dissimilar applications can be connected together using a middleware software. With this, the user can request data from the database, for which they have to use the form of the web browser which is displayed.

With this, the web server can easily access dynamic web pages according to the requirements and profile of the user.

Middleware has the ability to split products, which acts as a super glue between two applications.

Middleware acts as a plumbing agent as it attaches two sides of an application and passes the data from within.

Generally it consists of TP monitors, DCE environments, RPC systems, Object Request Brokers (ORBs), Database access systems, Message Passing etc.

5 Audio/Video Server

With the help of Audio/Video Servers, multimedia applications get that ability so that they can broadcast streaming multimedia contents to websites.

Multimedia streaming is a technique for transporting data. Due to the growth of the Internet, this technology has also increased a lot. Streaming is a very good solution for users who do not have the facility to download large multimedia files.

When the client-side receives the data and forwards it in the form of a steady stream, then it processes that data and then immediately converts it into sound and pictures in their desired format. Slowly many competing streaming technologies are coming now.

6 Chat Server

With the help of these Chat Servers, many users are now able to communicate and exchange data and information with each other in the same environment and this is possible with real-time discussion capabilities because real-time discussion is possible. Time is meant to be instant.

It is also offering many other real-time features such as navigation, display of moving objects at the same time when text is appearing. Real-time only takes a minute or a few seconds to react.

7 Fax Server

This Fax Server is commonly used in those big organizations where time is money. Fax Servers save time and reduce incoming and outgoing telephone resources.

8 FTP Server

The full form of FTP is File Transfer Protocol. This is a very old internet service that helps users to move files from one place to another very securely.
FTP Servers also provide file safety, transfer control and organization of files.

9 Groupware Server

The main objective behind creating Groupware Server was that it allows users to easily work jointly, regardless of where they are, internet or a mutual intranet is used for this and in this way a near Work can be done together in the environment.

10 IRC Servers

IRC Servers are used to get real time abilities. The full form of IRC is internet relay chat in which many split networks of servers are located which permit users to attach with each other through an IRC network.

11 List Server

List servers are a very fantastic method by which mailing lists can be handled that bring statements, newsletters, or publicity. These List Servers are interactive discussions which are open to the community.

12 Mail Server

The function of Mail Servers is to store email in mutual networks, with the help of LANs and WANs, in the Internet.

13 News Servers

News Servers are used to share and deliver news, for this we use USENET news network because it is used by many people of the world.

14 Proxy Server

Proxy Servers are used to filter requirements, to get better appearance and to share out connections. Proxy Servers often exist in client programs, usually a web browser and an external server.

15 Telnet Server

Through these Telnet Servers, a user can log on to the computer and do his work.

Servers Operating Systems

Let us now know that some such examples of Servers operating systems are very important.

1 Microsoft Windows servers

These servers are from Microsoft Windows. Microsoft’s first real server operating system was Windows NT. Currently, the current Windows Server version is Windows Server 2016. This version supports many applications and databases.

2 Linux / Unix servers

These Linux / Unix servers are a very big major player in server operating systems. Multiple versions exist, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Debian, and CentOS. Linux / Unix servers are also considered open-source operating systems.

3 NetWare

As the client-server era is increasing. In such a situation, NetWare can become a major player in the server software space. Now NetWare has moved its server operating system to a Linux-based kernel and also named it Novell Open Enterprise Server (OES).

4 Cloud Servers

Virtual servers that are hosted in a third-party infrastructure, that too on an open network, such as on the Internet, are called cloud servers.

By the way, there are many cloud server providers in today’s time, the main ones being Google’s Cloud Platform, Microsoft Azure, and IBM Cloud.
