Pen Tool on Photoshop How to use the Pen Tool?
The Pen Tool in Photoshop is a tool used to create vector shapes and paths. To use the Pen Tool in Photoshop, select the Pen Tool from the Toolbox or press the P button on your keyboard. This tool can create very creative designs. Photoshop has many tools designed for different purposes. The Pen Tool is very useful whenever you need to create a vector design.
Before learning the Pen Tool, we need to understand how many types of images there are.
Basically, there are two types of images:
- Vector images
- Raster images

What are raster images?
An image is made up of pixels, each containing color information. The more pixels in a given image, the better the quality of the image.
Raster image is a photo clicked by our mobile or camera in which we click the photo of a real object or a person and the image formed from it is called Raster image which we call a photo, that is a type of Raster image.
Information in a raster image is stored in bitmap format. The larger the image, the larger its size will be on the disk, that is, the larger the megapixel camera used to click the photo, the larger its size will be.
The quality of an image is measured in resolution. Resolution means the number of pixels in a particular part of the image. It is measured in DPI. DPI means dot per inch, that is, how many dots (pixels) are there in 1 inch, this determines its quality.
What are Vector Images?
An image that isn’t made up of pixels, but is filled with only a color, a type of color profile, or we can say an image created using a path.
Path means we draw a line from one point to another and touch the starting point, then this entire path is called complete. A color is filled within this path, which is a type of vector image.
A vector image is an image created using mathematical calculations and filled with color. We can enlarge or reduce it to any size. Enlarging it doesn’t lose its quality; its quality remains the same.
What is the Pen Tool in Photoshop?
The Pen Tool is a freehand tool that allows us to create a path from one point to another by giving it a rounded shape or drawing a curve.
The Pen Tool is used to create complex shapes in Photoshop, Illustrator, or CorelDraw.
What is a Path?
A path is a line that runs from one point to another, connecting its starting point and ending point.
After joining the points, we can also create a shape.
Path and shape are different.
What is a Shape?
A Shape is a selected area filled with a color, while a Path is a line that runs from one point to another.
How to use the Pen Tool?
To use the Pen tool, click on a point with the mouse, then move the mouse and click on the next point. You will see a line being created, which is called a path.
In addition to such a path, we can draw a curved path or any other shape.
For that, click on the first point and then click on the next point, while holding down the mouse button, move the mouse downwards and release the mouse button.
You will see a handle appear which has both front and back sides. With this handle, we can set the curvature of the path as per our requirement.
The front handle controls the front portion, and the rear handle controls the back portion.
As we rotate the handle, the path’s roundness increases, and as we expand the handle, its depth increases.

By clicking on the handle with Alt + Click, the handle breaks and then starts working freely, meaning after breaking the handle, we can manage the front and back shapes even better.
How to Change a Path Into a Selection
Starting from the Pen Tool’s starting point and then moving the mouse back to the starting point, an “O”-shaped mark will appear. Clicking on it will complete the path.
Right-click on the path and click on the “Make a selection” option.
Then, press Feather 1 and click OK.
As soon as you click, the path line will change to a dotted line.
This is called a selection.
You can use the selection as per your needs.
Pen Tool Box
When we select the Pen Tool in Photoshop, we see six types of tools.

Pen Tool
Pen Tool in Photoshop You must have understood how to use the Pen Tool. Let me explain that the Pan Tool creates a path and also provides a handle to curve it, i.e., give it a roundness.
So that we can adjust that curvature as per our requirement. To make this adjustment, we have to move the handle forward, backward, and left, right.
By clicking with the Alt button, you can also break the points of the handle, which gives us the opportunity to use a handle in different directions.
Freeform Pen Tool
With the Freeform Pen Tool, we can draw any shape on the canvas with our mouse, just like with a normal pen. After drawing, this tool provides a number of points, which we can then use to adjust the shape to our desired size using handles. We can add or remove handles and points.
Curvature Pen Tool
The Curvature Pen Tool is the most advanced tool in the Pen Tool family, appearing in newer versions of Photoshop. Using the Curvature Tool, you can draw any type of shape very effectively.
To use it, simply open Photoshop’s Curvature Tool and, after selecting the point, click on the first point, then the second point. As soon as you click on the third point, you will see that it automatically takes a rounded and curved shape, which is a very advanced and smart technology.
With this tool, we can create any drawing very easily. If we want to draw a circle, we might have a lot of trouble drawing it with the normal Pen Tool.
However, if we use the tool, creating a circle is very easy.
Add Anchor Point Tool
As the name suggests, the Add Anchor Point Tool allows us to add another anchor point anywhere in a shape/path. To add it, simply click the path once with the mouse, and we’ll see a new anchor point appear at that location.
Delete Anchor Point Tool
With the Delete Anchor Point Tool, we can delete any point in a shape on a path by simply clicking on that point.
Convert Point Tool
When using the Pen Tool, we get two types of points: a Curve Point and a Corner Point. When we want to show a curve, we create a Curve Point, and when we want to show a turn, we create a Corner Point.
The Convert Point Tool converts a Curve Point to a Corner Point and vice versa.
To convert a Corner Point to a Curve Point, click the mouse and then drag it up, down, or sideways. This converts the Corner Point to a Curve Point.
