What is Mouse

Mouse is a computer hardware, which we also call Input Device. It controls the movement of the cursor or pointer on the display screen. Mice is a widely used device in computers today. It is connected with the computer via cable or wireless.

A mouse is a handheld input device, used by placing it above a desk or mouse pad. Usually the mouse has two buttons (left & right) and a scroll wheel. Using these buttons, you can select or move the text on the screen and you can go up and down on a page with the help of the scroll wheel.

History of Mouse

Mouse” was invented in 1964 by Douglas Engelbart. It was designed as a wooden box, which contained a circuit board and two metal wheels. This mic was first used with the Xerox Alto computer. Before this, there was no mouse, but data was inputted by typing commands on the keyboard.

In 1972, the ball mouse took its place, in which the wheels were replaced by the ball. It was created by Bill English. The advantage of this was that now the mice could be rotated in any direction. A few years later, Steven Kirsch introduced mice with a new technology called the Optical Mouse.

This model uses light to trace the movement of the mouse. In most modern computers, we use mice of optics model.

Functions of Mouse:

A computer mouse allows the user to move the cursor from one place to another.
It helps us to select text, drag files, and click on items on the computer screen.
With the help of the wheel present in the mic, we can scroll up and down a page.
Users can open any file or application by double clicking on it.

Mouse parts and their functions

The main parts and their functions of a modern computer mouse are given below.

Left and right buttons: Almost all modern mice have these buttons. By pressing the left button, we can select the object and a program is executed by double-clicking it. Pressing the same right button opens a pop-up of contextual menus.

Scroll wheel: It is present between two buttons, which helps us to scroll on a page.

Ball, Laser and LED: If the mouse is a mechanical mouse, then the ball is used to move the pointer in the X-Y direction on the computer screen. In contrast, optical mouse has a laser or LED light.

Circuit board: There is a board present inside the mice to convert the input we are giving into a signal and transmit it to the computer.

Cable: This cable is used to connect mice to the computer. This cable comes with USB or PS/2 port.

These parts are present in most of the normal mouse. However, more functions are also given in gaming or any specific type of mouse. Let us now know about the different connection types used in Mice.

Different Connection Types of Computer Mouse

Different Connection Types of Computer Mouse

To connect the mouse to the computer, there are many types of connection types such as:-

PS/2

Personal System/2 or PS/2 is a port, which is used to connect the mouse to the computer. This port made by IBM is most commonly seen in old personal computers. The design of the PS/2 port looks like a mini DIN plug which has six pins. Today, USB connectors have almost completely replaced them.

Although still many computer motherboards have additional slots for the PS/2 port. In earlier times, this technology was found in almost all PC mouse and keyboard.

USB

Their design is similar to other types of mice. But a USB port is used to connect them to the computer. This port is most useful for standardizing the connection of all peripheral devices. Universal Serial Bus supports USB, plug and play interface in short.

The USB port supports hot plugging. This means that you can connect USB without turning off the computer. Today we mostly use mice with USB ports in our computers.

Serial Port

In these mice serial port is used to establish connection to the computer. It is a D-type 9 pin male port (DB9M), which works on the principle of detecting two dimensional motion like other types of mouse.

Serial port is a physical communication interface. Through this data or information is entered and out of the computer bit by bit. Today, serial port mice are obsolete, as they were replaced by PS/2 and USB mouse.

Wireless Mice

These mice do not use any kind of cable or wire to connect to the computer. Rather, they are added to the computer through wireless technology such as Bluetooth, RF, and infrared radio waves. This technology is still new and is spreading rapidly in the market. Along with this, it eliminates the clutter of cables on your desktop.

A USB receiver comes with these mouse, which you can use after connecting it to your computer by connecting it to bluetooth. This type of mouse is also called cordless mouse.

Bus Mice

The mice that were first used in computers. Then they were referred to as Bus mice. They were used in IBM personal computers at that time. To connect them to PC, special bus interface was used which was implemented through ISA add in card.

Computer Mouse Drivers

We all know that mouse is a piece of computer hardware. Then how does it work, that is, how does it transmit any command to the computer. For this a proper device driver is installed in your computer. This driver is a type of software, which communicates with the operating system (OS) and tells it what instructions are being given by the mice.

Not only the mouse, but all other hardware devices will not be able to send and receive data correctly to the computer without their drivers. If ever your mice are not working even after everything is fine, then it means your mouse driver is missing. Which you will have to reinstall.

Mouse Types

Today we have different types of mouse, which you can use according to your convenience. Let us know about those different types of mouse.

Wired Mouse

Those mouse which use cable to connect to the computer are called wired or corded mouse. It can come with USB and PS/2 port. Even today many gamers and designers like to use them, because these mice have less input lag.

Their advantage is also that they do not require a battery to charge you. They take power only through cable. Apart from this, they are easily available in the market with low price.

Mechanical Mouse

Rubber ball was used to detect the movement in these mouse. They are also known as ball mouse. Mechanical mouse was used the most in olden times. Earlier mice used to have a wheel to move, due to which it was difficult to move the mice in every direction, but mechanical mouse gave us freedom in this.

Mechanical mouse are now obsolete as they have been replaced by optical mouse. One of their disadvantages was that the dust used to stick to the ball very quickly, which required frequent cleaning.

Optical Mouse

These widely used today use LED and optical sensors to track mouse movement. You will see red light from under these mouse. They have a tiny low-resolution camera, which takes a thousand or more pictures every second.

As soon as you change the position of the mice, it takes new pictures, so that the sensor knows that the movement has taken place. It does not work on reflective surface. For better experience, you can play it with the touchpad above it.

Laser Mouse

Laser mouse is also a type of optical mouse. It also uses similar technology to track position. The only difference between them is that the laser mouse uses a laser beam instead of an LED. Its advantage is that you can use it on glass and plastic surfaces. Although it is not that famous because it also has some flaws.

Wireless Mouse

Such mouse which do not use any kind of wired connection but give input to the computer using wireless technology. In this, you have to plug-in a USB receiver to your computer, after which you will be able to run mice. Although mice also come to connect via bluetooth.

They run on batteries and use the technology used in optical mice for tracking. You can take them anywhere. This type of mouse is also called cordless mouse.
