What is ISP? (What is ISP)

Internet Service Provider or ISP is the company that provides internet connection to the people. It is through ISPs that you can connect your computer, mobile phone and other Internet enabled devices (IoT Devices) to the Internet.

In addition to providing Internet access to users, many ISPs provide other Internet services such as telephone and television services, email services, software packages (such as browsers), web site design, domain registration, web hosting services, etc.

Generally, for whatever services the ISP provides to the user, a fixed fee is charged from the user. So if you have a computer and modem, but not an ISP subscription, you won’t be able to access the Internet.

The ISP is like a gateway to connect the device to the Internet. The First Internet Service Provider Company (The World) was established in the United States of America (USA) in 1984. The first publicly available Internet service in India was launched on 15 August 1995 by Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL).

Overall the main function of ISP is to provide internet access. Some of the major regional providers in India include Jio, Airtel, Vodafone, Idea, and BSNL.

Why is an Internet Service Provider needed

Can we access internet without ISP? This question is asked because most of the people do not know what is the meaning of Internet. The Internet is a vast network that connects computers around the world.

Google’s server is in the United States many thousands of kilometers away from you. But when you open Google.com, their site opens on your device in a matter of seconds. All this happens because Google’s server and your device are interconnected on the same network.

So it is the ISP’s job to make connectivity between Google’s servers and your device. To do this, fiber optic cables, telephone towers and satellites are used by the ISP. So in a way, ISPs are the Internet.

Our question is, can we access internet without ISP? Yes, of course you can, but for that you have to make your own internet. A cable line will have to be laid from your home to Google’s server. At least it is impossible for a common person to do this.

Many special telecommunications, networking, and routing devices are required to connect to the Internet. Now a common person cannot arrange such devices, so ISPs give their network on rent to provide internet connectivity to them.

Examples of ISP Companies

The Internet is called Network of Networks because it is not established by any one company or organization. Rather, the networks of many international and regional ISP companies together make up the Internet. Below you are told about the three levels of ISP. Which includes Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 ISPs respectively.

Tier 1 ISP

It is the highest level internet service provider. Because most of the network lines are established through Tier 1. They not only establish network lines at the regional level, but also lay internet cables under the sea to provide internet connections to other countries.

In fact, Tier 1 ISPs play an important role in bringing the Internet to the global level. Under the peering agreement, Tier 1 can connect to the networks of other Tier 1 ISPs for free and exchange Internet traffic using their networks.

Tier 1 Internet Service Providers do not provide Internet connections directly to the end user, but instead sell them to Tier 2. Examples of some of the major tier 1 ISPs in India:

Tier 2 ISP

A Tier 2 ISP is a service provider that purchases Internet transit from a Tier 1 Internet service provider. Tier 2 networks are spread over a region or a country, now if they want to connect to the internet of another country, then they need to connect to tier 1.

However, they are also connected to other Tier 2 companies under a peering agreement and use their network to send Internet traffic. Examples of major Tier 2 ISPs in India are given below:

Tier 3 ISP

They buy internet transit from Tier 2 and provide internet service in homes and offices. Tier 3 Internet service providers do not have their own networks, rather they use Tier 2 networks to connect people to the Internet. Examples of some major Tier 3 ISPs:

Spectra
Gigatel Networks etc.

How do ISPs connect users to the Internet

For this, first you take a subscription to a service provider (ISP subscription). After which they allow you to connect to their network. Once your device is connected to the Internet Service Provider’s network, they assign an IP address to your device.

When you open Google’s site, your browser sends a request to your ISP that a device with this IP address needs this web page. After which your service provider sends that request to Google’s server, after which that webpage is sent to you by Google’s server.

ISPs provide several types of Internet connections to provide connectivity to the customers. You can choose internet connection according to your personal requirement. Below are some of the major ISP connection information.

Dial up connection

In this, a telephone line is used to connect the computer to the Internet. This means that you use your home landline to connect to an Internet service provider, which then connects you to the Internet.

Modem is required to set-up dial-up connection. This modem acts as an interface between the computer and the telephone line.

Although this connection is very slow, but in such small rural areas where there is no cable connection, dialup connection is used to provide internet connectivity.

DSL Connection (DSL- Digital Subscriber Line)

DSL is seen as a better form of dial-up connection. Because here also existing telephone lines are used to create internet connectivity, but with some important changes.

It can also be called a form of Broadband Connection. Many local phone companies offer DSL connections. They work to provide high-speed internet to your home or office through the existing telephone network.

A cable modem or DSL transceiver is used to establish connectivity. After installing DSL, you can leave your internet connection open and still use the phone line for voice calls.

Cable internet

These ISP connections also fall under the category of broadband internet access. But in this cable TV network is used instead of telephone line to provide internet connectivity.

First of all, the Internet service provider lays a coaxial cable in your home or office, which is connected to the cable modem. The modem is then connected to your computer via an Ethernet cable.

Coaxial cable can transfer data at a higher speed than a normal telephone line.

Wi-Fi connection

Today we have Wi-Fi enabled smartphones and laptops. Therefore, you will easily get Wi-Fi hotspot facility in public places like hotels, restaurants and airports. By connecting to which you can access the Internet in your device.

Apart from the modem, you also need a router for wireless connectivity. Wi-Fi works in the same way as other wireless technologies. It uses radio frequency to transfer signal between two devices.

Satellite internet access

If you are in an area where there is no better option of internet connection, then you can use satellite internet. This is a wireless connection that uses three satellite dishes to send data from the satellite to your computer.

Fiber-optic internet

This is a new technology, whose internet speed is many times higher than dial-up, DSL and cable connections. The download speed is around 1 Gbps. Fiber-optic line is used in this to restore internet connectivity.
