What is CPU

A CPU i.e. whose full form is Central Processing Unit is like the brain of any computer or mobile device. CPUs receive data from every other part of the device and then act according to the instructions

Most computers run on Intel or AMD CPU chips. However, newer Apple products use custom CPUs made by Apple.

The CPU was first invented and developed at Intel in the early 1970s with the help of Ted Hoff and others. The first processor released by Intel was the 4004 processor.

A CPU or Central Processing Unit is the most important part of your computer. It is found on the motherboard and is responsible for executing every command created by you or the app. It opens apps, loads data, displays images – the CPU is involved in almost everything on your computer.

Your desktop computer or laptop is not the only device with a CPU chip. In your phone, in your video game console, in your smartwatch, everyone has a CPU. If you bought a car made in the last ten years, it probably has a CPU for its dashboard screen as well.

CPU is an important part of any modern device. The main function of the CPU is to take input from a peripheral (keyboard, mouse, printer, etc.) or computer program and interpret what it needs. The CPU then outputs the information to your monitor or performs the peripheral’s requested task.

Components of the Central Processing Unit (CPU)
The three major basic components in a Central Processing Unit are given below –

Arithmetic Logic Unit
Control Unit
Registers
CPU also has some add on components like Address Generation Units, Memory Management Unit, Cache.

Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) → ALU is responsible for arithmetic and logical operations

Control Unit → Control Unit controls the operation of the CPU. The ALU issues signals to the memory and I/O devices at the right time to all units of the CPU to execute instructions. Moves data from external memory to ALU. Control Unit stores the output of processing in external memory.

Registers → Register, A. Intermediate provide storage space to hold the result. Some registers are used for internal purposes which cannot be accessed from outside and some are accessible to users.

How CPU works

CPU is the foundation of your computer. Without the CPU, your computer will not run or will be very less usable. Whenever you try to open a program or file or type something, the data is sent to the CPU. The CPU then decodes the data and decides whether this command can be performed or not.

Since the CPU is simultaneously handling data from every part of the computer, it is easy to overload the CPU with commands. This is the reason why your computer slows down when you have too many programs open and your computer may crash if your CPU is forced to do too many tasks at once.

Any CPU irrespective of its size, form and complexity executes the program according to a set of logical instructions. The various steps in execution are common to most computers which are as follows –

Fetch

In this phase the CPU receives instructions from the memory where the program is stored. The address of the instruction is stored in the program counter and once the address is processed it follows the next instruction in a logical sequence.

Decode

In this step the instruction given is decoded and the operation to be performed is performed

Execute

Operation code and operands are used to execute the instruction and the result is stored in the component register of the CPU.

  • CPU is the heart and brain of the computer and it is the primary unit of the computer.
  • It is small in size and fits snugly in its slot in the motherboard.
  • It facilitates the design of small computers such as mobile phones, tabs and embedded computers etc.
  • The power of arithmetic and logical operations can be increased by having multiple processors in the computer.
  • It quickly crunches mathematical and business data.

The major types of CPU are classified as Single-core, Dual-core, Quad-core, Hexa-core, Octa-core and deca-core processor which are explained below –

  • Single-core CPU
  • Dual-core CPU
  • Quad-core CPU
  • Hexa-core CPU
  • Octa-core CPU
  • Deca-core CPU

Single-core Processor

It is the oldest type of CPU available and employed in most personal and official computers. Single-core CPU can execute only one command at a time and it is not efficient in multi-tasking

Dual-core Processor

It is a single CPU which has two strong cores which works like Dual CPU. But looks like a CPU. Dual-core CPU handles multitasking effectively.

To effectively use a dual-core CPU, the running program and the operating system must have a unique code called simultaneous multi-threading technology. Dual-core CPU is faster than single-core but not as strong as quad-core CPU.

Quad-core Processor

Quad-core CPU is a refined model of multiple-core CPU features and is designed with four cores on a single CPU. Similar to dual-core CPUs, it also divides the workload between cores. Which enables quad-core for efficient multitasking

This type of CPU is mostly used by gamers or people who have to execute many different programs at the same time.

Hexa-core Processor

This is another multiple core processor which is available with 6 cores and can execute tasks faster than quad-core and dual-core processors

Octa-core Processor

Octa processor is developed with eight independent cores. It works faster than quad-core. Octa-core is fully defined with dual code cores and adjusted accordingly to deliver effective performance.

Deca-core Processor

Deca-core is available with ten independent systems that are able to execute and manage the task with greater success than other processors developed so far

It is faster than other processors and is quite successful in multi-tasking. Deca-core processors are in trend with their advanced features. Most of the smartphones are now available with the low cost Deca-core processor. Surely, most of the gadgets in the market are updated with new processors to give more useful purpose to the people.

Types of CPUs Based on CPU Chips

There are two types of CPUs based on the chips –

x86 CPU Chips
In Windows-based PCs, x86 chips are far more popular and are usually made by Intel or AMD. Most Intel CPUs are part of the Intel Core family. These are named as Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5, and Intel Core i7. You have Ryzen CPUs from AMD like Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 9

As a general rule, the higher the number in the CPU’s name, the faster it will perform.

Although some of these CPUs are faster than others. They are all interchangeable largely because they all use the “x86 instruction set”. They all speak the same language and can all understand and execute the commands that the rest of the computer sends.

ARM CPU Chips
Mobile devices, newer MacBooks and some Windows computers use ARM CPU chips. They are less powerful and consume less energy, making them perfect for small appliances. They run a bit slow, but not so much that the average user will notice

Apple has invested heavily in ARM chips over the years. Their most recent set of CPU chips were the M1s, designed specifically to run the new MacBooks.
