What Is Computer?

— Its Characteristics, History, and Definition

The computer has become an integral part of our lives. It is used on a daily basis, ranging from schools to offices. Furthermore, computers are being extensively utilized in homes as well to handle daily tasks.

Therefore, we should all be thoroughly familiar with computers. Only then can we successfully utilize this electronic device effectively. Furthermore, significant questions related to computers are frequently asked in competitive examinations. For this reason as well, possessing basic knowledge of computers becomes essential.

Keeping all these factors in mind, I have prepared this article, in which I provide comprehensive information regarding computers. To facilitate ease of study, this article has been divided into the following sections.

What is a Computer?

The mere mention of the word “computer” triggers hundreds of thoughts in one’s mind. This is because a computer can single-handedly perform hundreds of tasks. Yes—hundreds! You read that right—and it can do them all simultaneously.

Defining a computer in words can be somewhat challenging. This is because every individual utilizes a computer for a different set of purposes.

There is a common perception that “Computer” is an English word. In Hindi, the term “Computer” translates to “calculation.” This implies that a computer is a calculating device (or calculator). However, it would be incorrect to describe a computer merely as an adding machine, as it performs hundreds of different tasks in addition to simple addition.

Therefore, we can say that a computer cannot be confined to a single definition. The meaning of a computer varies for each individual, depending on its usage.

Despite the multitude of meanings associated with the term “computer,” we have attempted to formulate a definition for you. However, you should not regard this as the definitive or authoritative definition of a computer, as its meaning varies depending on its specific function.

Definition of a Computer

A computer is a machine that performs tasks according to a set of predefined instructions. More precisely, a computer is an electronic device that accepts data with the help of input devices, processes it, and provides that data in the form of information using output devices.

It is evident from this definition that a computer first receives instructions from the user, which are entered with the aid of various input devices. These instructions are then processed, and finally, based on those instructions, the computer produces a result that is displayed using output devices.

Instructions comprise various types of data, such as numbers, alphabetic characters, statistics, and so forth. The computer generates results based on this data. If the computer is provided with incorrect data, it will produce incorrect results. The implication is clear: the computer operates according to the principle of GIGO—Garbage In, Garbage Out.

Did you know?

Charles Babbage is considered the father of the computer. In 1833, he invented the Analytical Engine, which served as the foundation for the modern computer. For this reason, he was accorded the title of “Father of the Computer.”

What is the Full Form of ‘Computer’?

Since the computer is a multi-purpose machine, it has remained impossible to confine it within a single definition to this day. In this context, the full form of the word ‘Computer’ is also a frequently discussed topic. Various individuals and organizations have offered different interpretations of it, based on their respective experiences. However, none of these constitutes a “standard” full form. I have provided a full form for ‘Computer’ below—one that is quite popular and meaningful.

Introduction to Computers

A computer cannot perform its tasks in isolation. To execute a specific task, a computer relies on the assistance of various types of devices and programs. These devices and programs of the computer are known, respectively, as ‘Hardware’ and ‘Software.’ You will learn more about these computer devices and programs in the upcoming lessons. A typical computer looks something like this.

Various Computer Components

The computer you see above is known as a ‘Desktop Computer.’ Currently, this type of computer is the most prevalent. In this image, you can observe several distinct components; together, they constitute the computer system. Let us briefly learn about these components.

System Unit

A System Unit is a box that houses the components necessary for a computer to perform its functions. The System Unit is also referred to as the CPU (Central Processing Unit). It contains components such as the motherboard, processor, hard disk, etc., which enable the computer to operate. It is also known as the Computer Case.

Monitor

A monitor is an output device that displays the results of the instructions provided to it. It is exactly like a television. Currently, LCD and LED screens have replaced traditional monitors.

Mouse

KeyBrand

KeyBrand is an input device used to issue instructions to a computer. It is through this device that desired data and commands are conveyed to the computer. It features various types of keys, through which data and instructions are transmitted to the computer. You can learn how to use KeyBrand here.

The mouse is also an input device used to issue commands to a computer. We use it to select programs available on the computer. You can learn how to use a mouse here.

Speakers

Speakers are output devices that enable us to hear audio from a computer. It is through them that we hear the sound available in songs, movies, programs, games, and other media.

Printer

A printer is also an output device used to obtain information processed by a computer on paper. The information obtained on paper is also referred to as a ‘hard copy.’ Conversely, information that remains stored within the computer itself is called a ‘soft copy.’

Limitations of Computers

A computer is a machine that relies on humans to perform its tasks. Unless instructions are entered into it, it cannot produce any results.
However, in the modern era, capabilities enabling computers to think and reason are being developed through Artificial Intelligence.

It requires a clean environment to function properly, as its efficiency is compromised in dusty surroundings. It may even cease to operate.

Career Opportunities in the Computer Fields – Careers in Computing

The field of computing is vast. Numerous specialized domains have emerged within it, which have been further subdivided into various sub-fields. Consequently, from a career perspective, the computer sector is flourishing with opportunities.

All that is required is someone willing to cultivate it properly.

For your convenience, I am outlining some popular (though not exhaustive) job roles within the computer sector—positions you can secure by studying computer science and related disciplines.

Computer Programmer

The person who writes the code for the computer you are currently operating is known as a computer programmer. It is this individual who writes the code for all the various functions present within the computer, thereby making tasks easier for us.

A computer programmer is proficient in various programming languages ??and possesses the ability to write code in all of them. However, some programmers choose to specialize in a specific language, focusing their efforts primarily on that particular language for their coding work.

As you know, a computer is a standalone machine; however, to function, it requires numerous other components. A Hardware Engineer is responsible for manufacturing and testing these various devices, as well as analyzing them to meet evolving requirements.

This professional also handles essential tasks such as determining the placement of specific components within a computer system, designing their structure, and ensuring user convenience.

It is also the responsibility of a hardware engineer to verify hardware compatibility and perform necessary updates whenever changes are made to the software. The RAM installed in your computer, the motherboard, and the cabinet design—all these aspects are managed by a hardware engineer.

If you enjoy creating new things and experimenting with them, you might want to try your hand at this career path.

Software Developer

You might compare this role to that of a computer programmer; however, there is a subtle distinction between the two that is essential to understand. Only then can you gain a proper grasp of both career paths.

A computer programmer primarily creates programs that run on computer hardware—such as operating systems, utility programs, and the like.

In contrast, a software developer develops computer programs designed to meet the needs of general users—examples include MS Office, Tally, WhatsApp, web browsers, and similar applications.

Web Developer

You are reading this article on a website—one that was developed by a web developer. Their primary role is to build websites.

Additionally, web developers are responsible for handling the essential technical tasks required to keep a website live, such as hosting, security, and so forth.

They work in collaboration with web designers; in the case of small businesses, they often even share the same office space.

Web Designer

The role of a web designer involves designing a website’s layout, color schemes, button configurations, themes, and user-friendly navigation, among other elements.

They create all these designs using graphic tools, which are subsequently brought to life using front-end programming languages.

A web developer then integrates this design into the website, and in this manner, a website is constructed. In many instances, a single individual handles this entire scope of work; such a person is known as a Full Stack Developer.

A Full Stack Developer possesses expertise in both web designing and web development.

Data Scientist

They are also referred to as “data miners,” as their role involves unearthing various types of data and, through analysis, deriving meaningful solutions from it.

Data scientists primarily work with large-scale businesses, as this is where data is typically accumulated. A data miner performs crucial tasks such as categorizing this data into various groups, analyzing it to identify specific patterns, and subsequently devising solutions to particular problems.

Network Administrator

In offices, work is carried out simultaneously on hundreds of computers. These systems belong to companies, institutions, government departments, universities, and similar entities, and remain interconnected via a network.

A Network Administrator performs tasks such as designing these networks, managing them, and resolving technical issues.

Game Developer

A game developer is the person responsible for creating your favorite games. As the name itself suggests, their work revolves around games. Game development can be undertaken for both computers and mobile devices.

These games can range from those designed to solve specific problems to those intended purely for general entertainment. Web-based games are also created with the objective of engaging users on websites; these games run on web servers, meaning users do not need to install them on their own devices.

Computer Teacher

You do not learn computers solely for the purpose of performing work; rather, you can also earn a livelihood by teaching others. In other words, you can build a career in the field of teaching.

To teach computers, you need to acquire an educational degree in addition to your computer skills. You can obtain this degree through distance education as well.

Computer Operator

The primary responsibility of a Computer Operator is simply to operate a computer. However, the actual nature of the work depends on the specific workplace and the position held.

For instance, at a hotel reception, a Computer Operator’s duties involve updating information related to room bookings, room availability status, billing, and similar tasks. Similarly, in a call center, the role entails managing call management software and interacting with customers.

You can secure a job as a Computer Operator by simply completing a basic computer course; there is generally no significant demand for additional specialized skills for this role.

Data Entry Operator

The work of a Data Entry Operator bears some resemblance to that of a Computer Operator. Their primary responsibility involves entering data into computer programs, for which they receive a salary.

They can also secure work on a “per-entry” basis, which can be performed online from the comfort of one’s home. The nature of this work is part-time; therefore, you can consider taking up this job to cover your expenses while pursuing your studies.

Computer Typist

I—that is, G.P. Gautam (just to remind you, in case you’ve forgotten)—have always maintained that just as knowing how to write is essential alongside formal education, mastering touch typing is an equally vital skill when learning how to use a computer. I have even highlighted this point in my touch typing course.

However, neither the instructors pay any attention to this aspect, nor do the students seem to give it a second thought.

But did you know that a touch typist is actually valued more highly than a standard computer operator? This might come as a surprise to you, but it is, in fact, the truth.

Visit any court, and you will quickly realize the true value of a typist—especially when you have to pay a fee for every single word typed.

Indian courts, too, have designated positions for typists. Therefore, you can even secure a government job using this seemingly simple skill—one that is often overlooked.
