Do you want to know what is Animation – (What is Animation) So this post is very beneficial for you. In this post today you have been told about animation in simple words.

Hello friends I welcome you Sumit to our HE Blog, I hope you are healthy and safe. Friends, today we are going to talk about Animation.

Today we will know what is Animation, how many types are there? Who is its father and what is its history? So let’s start guys –

What is Animation

The simulation of movement made by a series of pictures is called animation. Animation is a method of drawing successive pictures, models, or even puppets in order to create the illusion of motion.

Our eyes can only retain an image for 1/10th of a second. In such a situation, when several images appear in a fast sequence, the brain starts interpreting them as a single moving image.

In traditional animation, images are drawn or painted on a transparent celluloid sheet to be photographed. Early cartoons are examples but today, most animated films are made with CGI (Computer-generated imagery)

The frame rate or the number of consecutive images displayed each second is considered to create the appearance of smooth motion in these captured, painted or computer generated images.

Moving characters are usually shot “on to”. Which means one image is shown for two frames. In total 12 drawings per second of film, a frame rate of 24 frames per second is often used for smooth motion.

Types of animation

There are following types of animation –

  • Traditional Animation
  • 2D Animation (Vector-based)
  • 3D Animation
  • Motion Graphics Animation
  • Stop Motion Animation

Traditional Animation

It is one of the oldest forms of animation used in film. This is sometimes called a Cel animation. In traditional animation as mentioned above, objects are drawn on celluloid transparent paper. To create an animated sequence the animator has to draw every frame. This is a system similar to a Flipbook.

Traditional animation is often 2D animation. Aladdin, The Lion King and other earlier cartoons are excellent examples. In earlier years, the animator would draw on a table that had a light inside so the creator could see their previous animation. While the traditional style is not nearly as prevalent today, pictures are usually made on tablets.

2D Animation (Vector)

2D Animation can come under traditional animation. But vector-based animation is animation that can be 2D without being traditional.

In vector-based animation, motion can be controlled by vectors rather than pixels. Images in familiar formats like JPG, GIF, BMP are pixel images.

These images cannot be enlarged or reduced without affecting the image quality. Vector graphics do not need to worry about their resolution. Shapes can be made to form an image.

Vector-based animation uses mathematical values to resize images. They can reuse these creations so that animators don’t have to draw the same characters over and over again. It’s also helpful for animators who aren’t the best Drawer.

3D Animation

Today 3D Animation is the most popular type of computer animation. 3D Animation is a long, intense process. In 3D animated movies, the animator uses a program to move the body parts of the character.

They set their digital frame when all parts of the character are in the correct position. They do this for each frame and the computer calculates the speed from each frame.

From “Toy Story” in 1995 to “Coco” today, 3D animation has become the dominant genre in animated films. 3D animation is also unique in that the character’s full body is always visible, unlike 2D or other traditional methods.

Whether you’re using drawing in 2D or computing in 3D, animators and filmmakers alike look to Storyboard to plan each frame. Unlike live-action, animation films cannot rely on camera tricks in one shot. Storyboards are the lifeline for creating animation.

Motion Graphics Animation

Motion Graphics are digital graphics. Which usually creates the illusion of motion for title sequences in commercials, movies. But ultimately they are used to tell something to the audience. They are often combined with sound for multimedia projects. These are a type of animation mostly used in business.

Stop Motion Graphics Animation

Stop Motion includes Claymation, Pixelation, Object-Motion, Cutout Animation and more. But the basic mechanics are similar to the traditional style like flipbook. Instead of drawing though, Stop Motion adjusts the physical objects each frame.

History of animation

It is unclear when and where animation first came to life. The concept of storytelling has been around for centuries.

From shadow puppets in circa 200 AD, to magical lanterns in the 1650s, storytelling through motion has always been.

But it was in 1832 when the Phénakisticope was invented by Joseph Plateau. From which the first widespread animation device came into existence. Using the persistence of vision theory, it created a fluent illusion of motion. When multiple images are combined into a single moving image in the brain it is called persistence of vision.

In 1834, William George Horner created a similar motion picture projector in which drawings were placed inside a drum that turned in a circular fashion. This was one of the greatest innovations.

Which laid the foundation for presenting the film. Horner originally named it Daedatelum or “wheel of the devil”. But the French inventor, Pierre Desvignes named it the Zoetrope. It was a Greek word meaning “things that turn”.

Father of animation

History tells us that many different people were involved in the making of animation. James Stuart Blackton is the father of American animation. Although he was a British filmmaker.

Blackton created the first animation in America and was one of the first to use the stop motion technique. In 1900, he is credited with making the first animated film called “Enchanted Drawing”.

In 1906, he goes on to make a silent film. Where pictures on a blackboard are captured using film at a rate of 20 frames per second. He named it Humorous Phases of Funny Faces.

However, if you ask the world who is considered the “Father of Animation”, you will find a name that stands out. French cartoonist mile Cohl is credited with making the first truly animated film

In 1914, Earl Hurd created cel animation, making him the inventor of a sort of traditional genre. This, of course, revolutionized the entire industry for most of the 20th century.

The same year the first animated short with a distinctive character was created by cartoonist Winsor McCay called “Gertie the Dinosaur” before “Mickey Mouse” appeared.
