When the computer is started for the first time or immediately after installing Windows, there is only one icon – Recycle Bin on the desktop.

Adding and Removing Icons on the Desktop

1 Adding Shortcut to Desktop

Step: 1 First of all go to the item whose shortcut is to be made.

Step: 2 Now right-click on the item.

Step: 3 Now from the available options, click on Send to and then Desktop (create shortcut).

Step: 4 As soon as you do this, the shortcut item of the related item will be added to the desktop.

Adding and Removing Common Desktop Icons

Personal Folder (User Account), Computer, Networks, Recycle Bin and Control Panel are considered as Common Desktop Icon in Windows PC. In the beginning, only the Recycle Bin is on the Desktop. Step: 1 First right-click on the empty space on the desktop.

Step: 2 Now click on Personalize shown below from the available options.

Step: 3 After this, click on Change desktop icons shown above in the left corner.

Step: 4 Now the Dialog Box of Desktop Icons Settings will open in front of you.

Step: 5 Check the icon you want to add from here.

Step: 6 And uncheck in front of the item you want to remove.

Removing Desktop Icons

Step: 1 First of all right-click on the icon you want to remove from the desktop.

Step: 2 Now click on Delete from the available options.

Step: 3 By doing this, the icon will be removed from the desktop.

Moving Desktop Icons

• To do this, first hold Left-Click on the icon that you want to move.
• Now drag and hold the left-click of the mouse where you want to place this icon and release it when you reach it. This action is called Dragging.

Step: 1 First right-click on the empty space on the desktop.

Step: 2 Now click on View from the available options.

Step: 3 After this click on Auto arrange icons.

Step: 4 By doing this, all the icons will be set on the left side and will not be scattered again. Because now the icons are locked.

Step: 5 To Unlock Icons, click back on View then Auto arrange icons.

Hide Unhide Desktop Icons

The icons that users do not want on the desktop or if there are more icons then delete them. But, there is another way also. We can hide Desktop Icons. to do this (What are Desktop Icons)

Step: 1 First right-click on the empty space on the desktop.

Step: 2 Now from the available options, first click on View then Show Desktop Icon.

Step: 3 By doing this all the icons will be hidden.

Step: 4 Repeat this process to Unhide Icons.
