The most important part in the Taskbar is the Windows Start Button, which is located at the bottom left corner. The menu that opens on pressing the Start Button is called Start Menu. Its design and appearance depend on the Windows Version and Manufacturers.

Start Menu is used by the user to perform the following tasks. (Windows Start Menu)

  • To start programs, applications.
  • To open the most used Folders, Files, Programs.
  • To Adjust Computer Settings.
  • To turn off the computer.
  • To Log Off and Change User Account from Windows.
  • To take help of Windows OS.

To start the Start Menu, click on the Start Button or press the Windows Key from the keyboard. Start Button Menu will open in front of you.

The Start Menu you see above is the Start Menu of Windows 7. Similar menus are found in other versions of Windows. The Start Menu has three major parts.

  • Left Pane
  • Search Box
  • Right Box

1 Right Pane

Left Pane is the first part of the Start Menu. This page contains a list of computer programs. Which may be different according to the manufacturers. (Windows Start Menu)

In the beginning, there are few programs in this list. But, after a few days this list increases. This happens for two reasons. First, installing new programs by the user, and second, the programs which are being used more by the user, Windows also adds them to this list.

2 Search Box

There is a Search Box just below the left part of the Start Menu. Its use is to search the programs and files located in the computer.

Search Box can search all the items located in the computer including Programs, Files, Folders, Personal Folders (Documents, Picters, Desktop), E-mails, Contacts etc. (Windows Start Menu)

3 Left Pane

The right side of the Start Menu is called Right Pane. Computer Settings, Features, Most Used Files and Folders can be accessed through Right Pane. Meaning Windows Parts can be easily accessed from here.

The links located in the right pane are being told below.

Personal Folder – This is the first part and the name of the User Account is the name of this folder. This folder contains User-Specific data.

Documents – This link opens the Documents Folder. In which Text Files, Word Files, Excel Sheets, Presentations etc. are stored.

Pictures – This opens the Pictures Folder. In which Pictures and Graphics Files are saved and can be done.

Music – Here Audio Files and other Music Files are saved.

Games – Games installed in the computer can be accessed through this folder.

Computer – This folder is very important. Hardwares connected to the computer like Hard Disk Drives, Cameras, Printers, etc. can be accessed through this folder.

Control Panel – Appearance and Functionality of the computer can be customized by this folder. And new programs can be installed in the computer and unusable programs can be uninstalled.

Devices and Drivers – From here you can get information about the devices installed in the computer like Mouse, Keyboard, Scanners etc.

Default Programs – Settings of Default Programs can be done to do a specific task from here.

Help and Support – Help can be taken from here regarding Windows and Computer. Which are present both online and offline.

3.1 Shut Down Button

The Shut Down Button is located at the bottom of the Right Pane. With this the computer is turned off. On clicking Next Arrow, some more buttons open. Which includes Switch user, Log off, Lock, Restart, Sleep, Hibernate etc. (Windows Start Menu)

Opening Computer Programs

We can open our favorite programs, folders or other items in the computer in two ways.

  • By Program List
  • by Search Box

1 Opening through Program List

This is the first and easiest way to open any program. By following these steps, you can open the program present in the computer.

First of all open the Start Menu by clicking on the Start Button.
When the Start Menu opens, look at the name of your program in its left pane. If yes, then click on it. This program will open.
If the names are not in the list, then by clicking on All Programs, open all the programs and folders present in your computer. From here you can open your program by searching for its name in the list.

2 Opening Programs by Search Box

Open the Start Menu by clicking on the Start Button. And the program you want to open. Start typing his name.
As soon as you start writing. All types of Items (Programs, Files, Folders, Musics, Web History) related to that Word, Text will be visible in front of you in the Left Pane.
As soon as your program appears in the search result, click on it and open it.
