World’s first hard disk Hard drive history

A long time ago, when you had to spend about 50000 rupees for a 5MB computer hard disk, now you understand that today 5MB can store only your selfie, and in today’s time The cost of a 4TB harddisk is around Rs 10,000. Even if you keep the inflation rate in mind, you can see that the capacity of the hard disk has increased by 200 times, while the price has been reduced by about 200 percent.

The history of hard drives is not only a fascinating story of technological development but it is also responsible for this era of information. We live in a data driven society and this would not be possible without the high capacity hard drives available in computers, mobiles and data centers.

When IBM produced the first hard drive on September 13, 1956, some people had imagined that it would have an impact on our daily lives for more than 50 years. IBM launched a supercomputer named 305 RAMAC, which had a hard disk drive (HDD) weighing more than a ton and could store only 5 MB of data.

At that time the price of this hard disk was around Rs. 60000, ie Rs. 12000 per MB, it was so much that only the US Army and some rich private business could use the RAMAC 350. Its primary use was real-time accounting.

IBM did not previously think that anyone would need more than 5 MB of hard disk capacity, but in the 1960s launched the IB 1301 mainframe computer, which offered removable platters.

The IBM 1311, launched in 1963, could have six disks, each disk capable of storing 2.6 MB of data. The size of the storage disk was also reduced from 24 inches to 14 inches. By this time, the price of mainframe computers had also come down drastically.

IBM introduced the first 1 GB HDD in 1980. However, at a cost of $ 44,000, the average consumer did not value moving into the home at all. The fact that it weighed 500 pounds presented another major problem.

Built in 1978 by Seagate, the company introduced the first 5.25-inch HDD in 1980 that actually abruptly changed the hard disk area, the ST 506 hard disk had 1 GB of data storage capacity.

While many other manufacturers launched their ST506 accessories HDDs, it was the Seagate company that became a major supplier to IBM’s growing “IBM personal computer” line, which was launched in 1981 and where “PC The word originated. After the introduction of the IBM personal computer AT in 1984, hard drives became a standard for all PCs.

The Rondime company is also responsible for the development of hard drives that developed the first 3.5-inch HDD in 1983. However, this company could not stay in the industry for long. Then in 1988 the Prairie Tek company built the first 2.5-inch HDD harddisk. Today, 3.5-inch HDDs are used in most desktop computers, while smaller 2.5-inch sizes are used in laptops.
