What is Scanner its Benefits
What is Scanner and its benefits
Friends, do you want to know what is Scanner – What is Scanner and Types of Scanner? So you have chosen this post right. In which today you will be given information about scanner language.
Hello friends I welcome you Sumit to our HE Blog, I hope you are healthy and safe. Friends today we are going to talk about Scanner.
Today we will know what is Scanner, how many types of scanners are there and what are its advantages and disadvantages? Let’s start knowing without delay –
What is Scanner
In a general term, a scanner is an electronic device that can scan handwritten or printed documents and pictures and convert them into a digital file format.
In computer terminology, it is an input device capable of scanning images and documents on paper. The images and documents are then converted into a digital file (soft copy) by the scanner and stored in electronic form on a computer or mobile device.
The scanned document can be viewed, shared, edited and printout can also be taken on the computer. The working of the scanner is very simple and it works on the principle of reflection and transmission
A bright light shines to convert the document into a digital copy. Reflected on a sensor (photosensitive element) after passing through a series of mirrors and lenses.
In most scanners, this sensor or medium is an electronic integrated circuit called a charged coupled device (CCD).
The photosites displayed on the CCD convert the light intensity into electronic signals and further process them into digital photos.
CCD is a widely used technology in today’s scanners. Photomultiplier Tube (PMT) and Contact Image Sensor (CIS) technology is also used in some high end and budget scanners.
The PMT technology used in drum scanners provides high-quality resolution images. But it is used in very limited areas due to its dimensions, power consumption etc. While CIS is the latest technology it lacks resolution, depth of field and varying range.
The technology used by low cost small handy digital cameras is Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS). Which being economical, low power consumption and easy integration into equipment results in an affordable design.
Types of Scanner
Scanners were seen mostly in offices and large institutions due to record keeping of many documents. But nowadays it is being used by almost every person for scanning tasks. Below are some of the common types of scanners available today –
Flatbed Scanner
Photo Scanner
Document Scanner
Portable Scanner
Flatbed Scanner
It is the most common and simple scanner available in the market for home and commercial applications. It is placed on a flat desk surface and has a lid that can be flipped over to view the document scanning glass
The document is placed on top of the glass and the light-capturing sensor is moving under the glass. Usually CCD or CIS display is in.
During the scanning process, the light source illuminates the glass and the moving sensor captures the image and converts it to digital format.
With a Flatbed Scanner you can scan almost all types of documents by size. Some Flatbed Scanners Come with Bluetooth or Wireless Connectivity and the Additional Features of Automatic Feeders.
Photo Scanner
Especially if you want to scan images, pictures, old photos. then you should go for photo scanner as they will give premium result
Although other scanners can also scan images. The results obtained through a photo scanner will be better in terms of color depth and also in the case of a larger number of photos to scan.
Some scanners come with their own image editing software. Which provides the highest resolution and clears old photos. But this scanner is a bit expensive as compared to other scanners
Document Scanner
These scanners are specially used for scanning multiple large size documents. It is also called Sheetfed scanner because the documents are kept in the feeder and not on the flatbed glass.
It is an ideal choice when you have limited space to work with and need to scan thousands of pages daily.
Some sheetfed scanners have advanced features to make the scanning process more efficient and faster. This is the reason why they are a bit more expensive than flatbed scanners.
Portable Scanner
Portable scanners often come in sizes that can fit in your pocket. It can be taken anywhere and connected to your handheld device via a USB port.
They can scan a page row by row or scan it completely by rotating it upside down. Portable scanners are good at scanning documents but not good enough to scan photos as compared to flatbed or photo scanners.
Use of Scanner
A scanner is one of the essential parts of computer hardware. Which uses light sensitivity technology to scan and convert a physical document or picture into a digital, computer-readable format. It has the following uses –
- The scanners are capable of scanning black and white or color documents or pictures.
- There are high- and low-resolution scanners available in the market and you can choose one depending on the type of applications they have.
- The most common use of a scanner is for copying and it is also an alternative to your normal copier machine. In other words, if you do not have copy photocopier machine. But if you need multiple copies of your documents, photos, presentations etc. then scanner comes to your rescue. Because it creates a digital file of your physical document.
- As long as the printer is connected to the computer, you can take any number of copies from the available digital file depending on your needs.
- It also lets you edit your document before printing it.
- The scanner also helps in keeping records of important documents in digital format. also known as digital archive.
For your information, let me tell you that before the advent of digital photography, all photographs were taken with traditional film roll cameras and were available only in hard copy format. Scanners help you convert this hard copy of pictures into digital copy. that can be shared with friends and families over the Internet.
Advantages of Scanner
There are various benefits of scanner which are as follows –
- Scanners deliver quality results with higher-resolution output than traditional fax machines.
- Scanners are built to handle photos, text, designs, graphics, etc.
- The scanner is capable of saving scanned documents or images in many formats including PDF documents.
- The scanner proves beneficial in increasing your efficiency and efficiency at home or workplace.
- Modern day printers are also multifunctional with an inbuilt scanner. Which is able to meet your needs. The important thing is that you do not need to buy a separate printer, scanner. In this way your space is saved.
- Unlike fax machines, which require a dedicated phone line to function and deliver results, scanners are independent and require no accessories to function. Files are stored digitally on your computer.
- Scanners are eco-friendly as they make digital copies of your documents, photos, important files and they can be shared over the internet via email. Whereas a fax machine requires paper for copying.
- Scanning in the scanner is a one-time operation that saves time and energy. Whereas in a fax machine, you have to spend time, energy and effort every time you exchange a page.
- The scanner is very easy to use and does not require any complicated setup and configuration. The built-in scanners that are part of a multifunction printer require only a simple fine-tuning and adjustment to get it used.
Disadvantages of Scanner
A scanner also has many advantages but it also has the following disadvantages –
- By using a scanner, we lose the original quality of an image or text.
- Scanned images or text or documents can take up a lot of space on your computer system.
- Scanner maintenance can be costly.
- It is a pick and click process which means it is a time consuming process. If we need to scan multiple text or pictures then it takes time to select and scan.
