What is Monitor

Monitor is an electronic output device also known as video display terminal (VDT) or video display unit (VDU)

It is used to display images, text, video, and graphics information generated by a computer connected via the computer’s video card.

Although it is almost like a TV. But its resolution is much higher than TV. The first computer monitor was introduced on 1 March 1973. Which was part of the Xerox Alto computer system.

Older monitors were made using a fluorescent screen and cathode ray tubes (CRTs). Due to which they were heavy and large in size and thus they were covering more space on the desk

Nowadays, all monitors are made using flat-panel display technology. These modern monitors take up less desk space than older CRT displays.

History of Computer Monitors

In 1964, the Uniscope 300 machine included a built-in CRT display. Which was not a real computer monitor. A. Johnson invented touch screen technology in 1965

On 1 March 1973, the Xerox Alto computer was introduced which contained the first computer monitor. This monitor featured a monochrome display and used CRT technology.

In 1975, George Samuel Hurst introduced the first resistive touch screen display, although it had been in use since 1982. In 1976, the Apple and Sol-20 computer systems were introduced. These systems had a built-in video port that allowed them to play a video screen on a computer monitor.

In 1977, James P. Mitchell invented LED display technology. But even after 30 years these monitors were not easily available to buy in the market.

In June 1977, the Apple II was released, allowing color display on CRT monitors. In 1987, IBM released the IBM 8513, the first VGA monitor.

In 1989, VESA defined the SVGA standard for the display of computers. In the late 1980s, color CRT monitors were able to support 1024 x 768 resolution displays

Eizo Nanao manufactured the Eizo L66 which was the first LCD monitor for desktop computers and was released in the mid-1990s.

In 1997, IBM, Viewsonic and Apple began developing color LCD monitors. Which provide better quality and resolution than CRT monitors

In 1998, color LCD monitors for desktop computers were manufactured by Apple. Later in 2003, LCD monitors outsold CRT monitors for the first time.

As of 2007, CRT monitors were consistently outsold by LCD monitors. So they became the more popular computer monitors. In 2006, Jeff Han released the first interface-free, touch-based monitor at TED.

LED Monitor MultiSync EA222WMe was released by NEC company in 2009. This was the first monitor released by NEC

AMD and Intel announced the end of support for VGA in December 2010. In 2017, touch screen LCD monitors became more affordable for customers as they began to reduce the price.

Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) monitor
This is the technique used in early monitors. It uses a beam of electrons to create an image on the screen. It consists of guns that fire a beam of electrons inside the screen.

Electron beams repeatedly strike the surface of the screen. These guns produce RGB (Red, Green, Blue) colors and with the help of the combination of these three colors more colors can be produced. Today’s flat-panel monitors replace CRT monitors.

Flat panel monitor

These types of monitors are lighter and take up less space. They consume less power than CRT monitors. These monitors are more effective because they do not provide harmful radiation.

These monitors are more expensive than CRT. Flat panel monitors are used in PDAs, notebook computers and cellular phones. These monitors are available in different sizes like 15″, 17″, 18″ and 19″ and more.

The display of a flat-panel monitor is made with the help of two plates of glass. These plates contain a substance that is active in many ways. Flat-panel monitor screens use two types of technologies which are given below –

1 – Liquid crystal display (LCD) → LCD screen contains a substance called liquid crystal. The particles of this substance are aligned in such a way that the light is reflected backwards on the screen. which allows to generate an image or block

Liquid crystal displays present a clearer picture than CRT displays and emit less radiation. In addition, it consumes less power and takes up less space than CRT displays

2 – Gas plasma display (GPD) → This display uses Gas plasma technology. Which uses a layer of gas between 2 plates of glass. The gas gives off ultraviolet light when voltage is applied.

With this ultraviolet light, the pixels on the screen shine and form an image. These displays are available in different sizes up to 150 inches. Although it provides effective colors as compared to LCD monitors. It is more expensive so it is used less

Touch screen monitor

These monitors are also known as input devices. It enables users to interact with the computer using a finger or stylus instead of using a mouse or keyboard.

This type of screen includes pictures or words that help users interact with the computer. It takes input from users by touching a menu or icon presented on the screen.

There are different types of touch screen monitors. Three common types are given below –

Resistive Touch Screen → Generally this screen consists of a thin electrically conductive and resistive layer of metal. When the touch is pressed there is a change in the electric current which is sent to the controller. Nowadays, these screens are in widespread use. These monitors are more reliable as they are not affected by liquids or dust

Surface Wave Touch Screen → These monitors process the input through ultrasonic waves. When a user touches the screen the wave is processed and absorbed by the computer. It is less reliable because they can be damaged by water or dust.

Capacitive Touch Screen → This screen includes a cover with an electrically charged material. This material causes a constant current to flow across the screen. It is mainly used by the finger instead of the stylus. These monitors have better clarity and are not damaged by dust. Capacitive touch screens are used in most smartphones nowadays.

Light Emitting Diode (LED) monitor
It is a flat screen computer monitor which means light emitting diode display. It is light in terms of weight. It uses a panel of LEDs as a source of light

Nowadays a large number of electronic devices, both large and small, such as laptop screens, mobile phones, TVs, computer monitors, tablets, etc., use LED displays.

It is believed that James P Mitchell invented the first LED display. On March 18, 1978, the first prototype of an LED display was published on the market at the SEF (Science and Engineering Fair) in Iowa. It was shown again at SEF in Anaheim, California on 8 May 1978. This prototype received awards from NASA and General Motors.

OLED monitor

This is a new flat light-emitting display technology. Which is more efficient, brighter, thinner and provides better refresh rate features and contrast than LCD displays

It is composed of a series of trace organic thin films between two conductors. These displays do not require backlight as they are Emissive displays. In addition, it provides better image quality and is used in tablets and high-end smartphones.

Nowadays, it is widely used in laptops, TVs, mobile phones, digital cameras, tablets, VR headsets. Over 500 million AMOLED screens were produced in 2018 on demand from mobile phone vendors

Samsung Display is the main manufacturer of AMOLED screens. For example, Apple is using an AMOLED OLED panel made by SDC in its 2018 iPhone XS – 5.8″ 1125×2436. Additionally, the iPhone X is also using the same AMOLED display.

DLP monitor

DLP stands for Digital Light Processing which is developed by Texas Instruments. It is a technique used for presentations by projecting images onto a screen larger than a monitor.

Before DLP was developed, most computer projection systems produced faint and blurry images because they were based on LCD technology.

DLP technology uses a digital micromirror device which is a small mirror placed on a special type of microchip. In addition, it provides better quality pictures that can be seen even in a normally lit room

TFT monitor

It is a type of LCD flat panel display whose full form is Thin Film Transistor. In TFT monitor all the pixels are controlled with the help of one to four transistors. High quality flat panel LCDs use these transistors.

TFT-based monitors provide better resolution than all flat-panel technologies. These are extremely expensive. lcds, which use thin-film transistor (TFT) technology, are known as active-matrix displays. Active-matrix displays provide higher quality than older passive-matrix displays

Plasma screen monitor

The plasma screen is a thin flat-panel and is capable of wall hanging like LCD and LED TVs. It has a brighter screen than an LCD display and is thinner than a CRT display.

It can be used to display the mode of either a digital computer input or an analog video signal. Sometimes, it is marketed as a thin-panel display

Plasma display has wide viewing angle, high contrast ratio and high refresh rate. Which is used to make the video less blur.

Additionally, it provides better quality images as it supports higher resolutions up to 1920 x 1080. Plasma screen also includes some disadvantages such as the possibility of screen burn-in, high power consumption, loss of brightness over time, heavy weight etc.
