What is Bit and Byte in computer
What is Bit and Byte
When you talk about computers, “Bit and Byte” are the two words that are often used. Like in the case of computer storage, we hear that the storage of its HDD, SSD or RAM is so many megabytes (MB), gigabytes (GB), and terabytes (TB).
Apart from this, you often talk that my internet broadband connection comes with internet speed of 1 megabit per second (1Mbps). Computer processors are either 32-bit or 64-bit. So after all what is the meaning of Bit and Byte here? What are they used for? Next we will answer all these questions for you. So first of all what is a Bit? Understand it
In this post you will read about the following topics:-
- what is bit
- what is a byte
- difference between bit and byte
- What is 32-bit and 64-bit bit
- all memory units of computer storage
- in short
What is Bit
Bit or Binary Digit is the smallest unit of information (data) on a computer. As you know, computers use Binary Number System to store all types of data like numbers, words, videos, music and pictures etc.
The binary number system calculates using only a combination of two digits (0 and 1). This means that the data in the computer is stored in the form of zero (0) and one (1) (this is called machine language). So we define a zero or one by Bit.
There are billions of transistors in the circuit of a computer processor. Each transistor is a small switch, which is activated by the electronic signals it receives. So whenever the transistor is ON, we consider it as ‘1’, while when it is OFF that condition is considered as ‘0’. So bits are the basic unit of data storage in a computer.
Four bits (1001) together form a nibble, which is also called a half byte. Data transfer speed is always measured in bits. For example 1Mbps (1 megabit per second) internet speed, here the small ‘b’ means bit. So bit is the smallest piece of computer data whose value can be 1 or 0.
What is Byte
A group of 8 bits is called a byte. That is, a series of eight zeros and one (10101100) is considered a byte, which can store a single character such as the letter B, the number 5, and a graphic symbol. More bytes are used to store large size data.
For example, kilobyte (KB) which contains 1,024 bytes, megabyte (MB) which is equal to 1,024 kilobytes, gigabyte (GB) which is equal to 1,024 megabytes, similarly terabyte (TB) which is 1,024 gigabytes. In computers, the term Bytes is often used to measure data storage.
For example, a hard drive can be of 250 GB (Gigabytes). Here it is important for you to know that capital ‘B’ is always used for bytes. Whereas small ‘b’ is used to represent bits.
Difference between bit and byte
Bit and Byte are both units of computer memory, but there are several basic differences between the two. However, by now you must have understood a little bit about the difference between these two. Let us see the main difference between them:
Bit is the smallest unit of computer memory, while a group of 8 bits is called a byte.
A bit can store two different values ’0′ and ‘1’, while conversely a byte can usually hold 256 different values.
Bit is represented by small ‘b’, while capital ‘B’ is used to represent Byte.
Data transfer speed is often measured in bits, while bytes are used to measure data size.
What is 32-bit and 64-bit bit
Whenever you buy a computer, you must have often heard from that shopkeeper that the processor of this computer is 32-bit or 64-bit. These technical terms often confuse people. Let us understand them in simple words. 32-bit and 64-bit represent how much memory a computer’s processor can access from the CPU registers at once.
These registers are a kind of small memory, which store instructions and memory addresses, etc. So in simple words a 64-bit processor is more capable than a 32-bit processor, as it can hold more data at a time. A 32-bit processor can address up to 4GB (4,294,967,296 bytes) and less of memory.
In contrast, a 64-bit processor can theoretically address 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 bytes or 18.4 exabytes of memory. However, this is too much because that much address space is not required. So you can say that a 64-bit processor can access any amount of RAM more than 4GB.
So if your computer has 8GB or more of RAM, you’ll need a 64-bit processor. There is also a big difference between them that who can calculate how many per second. The one who does more calculations per second will be able to complete a task faster.
As you know, 64-bit processors come in dual-core, quad-core, six-core, and eight-core versions. Multiple cores allow a processor to perform more calculations per second, increasing the processing power of a computer and allowing it to perform better.
However, it is important to know that 64-bit applications and programs do not work in 32-bit processors. Whereas 32 and 64-bit applications can work in a 64-bit processor. Apart from this, there is also a difference that a 32-bit processor will require a 32-bit operating system.
In contrast, both 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems can work in a 64-bit processor. So overall these technical terms refer to the data transfer capability of a computer processor.
All memory units of computer storage
As you know, the smallest unit of data is Bit which is represented by a 0 or a 1. A collection of 8 bits is called a byte, which represents a character. Now if we want to represent more characters then of course these bytes have to be added together to form further memory units.
The different units of memory are shown below:
S.r No | Unit | Value |
1 | Bit (bInary digiT) | 0 Or 1 |
2 | Nibble | 4 bits |
3 | Byte | 8 bits |
4 | Kilobyte (KB) | 1,024 bytes |
5 | Megabyte (MB) | 1,024 KB |
6 | Gigabyte (GB) | 1,024 MB |
7 | Terabyte (TB) | 1,024 GB |
8 | Petabyte (PB) | 1,024 TB |
9 | Exabyte (EB) | 1,024 PB |
In short
So what is Bit and Byte? These are data units, which are used to measure the amount of data. Usually data transfer speed is measured in bits, while data storage is measured in bytes. The value of a bit is described by 0 or 1 and the group of 8 bits makes a byte. So hopefully, after reading this post, you must have understood the meaning of bit and byte.
