What is a computer? And its Features

What is computer Short Definition and Types

Computers have become an integral part of our lives. They are used daily, from school to office. And computers are also widely used in homes to handle daily tasks.

Therefore, we all need to be well-versed in computers. Only then can we be able to use this electronic device effectively. Furthermore, important computer-related questions are often asked in competitive exams, making it crucial to have basic computer knowledge.

With all these considerations in mind, I have prepared this article, providing comprehensive information about computers. For easier study, I have divided this article into the following sections.

What is a Computer

Hundreds of thoughts come to mind as soon as you hear the word “computer.” Because a computer can perform hundreds of activities on its own. Yes, hundreds! You read that correctly, and that too simultaneously.

It’s a bit difficult to put a computer into words. This is because everyone uses it for different purposes.

A common misconception about computers is that the word “computer” is an English word. The Hindi word “computer” means “calculation.” This means a computer is a calculator. However, it would be incorrect to call a computer an adding machine, because computers perform hundreds of different functions beyond addition.

If you ask a writer/typist what a computer is, they might say it’s a typing machine. Similarly, if you ask a gamer, they might say it’s a gaming machine. If you ask a computer operator, they’ll try to define it as a machine that handles office work.

Therefore, we can say that a computer can’t be confined to a single meaning. The meaning of a computer varies from person to person, depending on its intended use.

Despite the many meanings of computer, we’ve attempted to define it for you. This definition cannot be considered a definitive definition of computer, as the meaning of computer changes depending on the task.

Definition of Computer

“A computer is a machine that performs tasks according to a set of instructions. More specifically, a computer is an electronic device that accepts data through input devices, processes it, and provides that data as information through output devices.”

This definition clearly states that a computer first receives instructions from the user, which are entered through various input devices. It then processes those instructions, and finally produces results based on the instructions, which it displays through output devices.Instructions contain various types of data, such as numbers, alphabets, figures, etc. The computer generates results based on this data. If the computer is given incorrect data, it will also produce incorrect results. This means that the computer operates on the principle of GIGO – Garbage In Garbage Out.

Did you know?

Charles Babbage is considered the father of the computer. He invented the Analytical Engine in 1833, which became the basis for the modern computer. For this reason, he was given the title of Father of the Computer.

What is the full form of a computer? – Computer Full Form

Because computers are multi-purpose machines, they still haven’t been able to pin down a single definition. In this context, the full form of a computer is also discussed, with various interpretations by different people and organizations based on their own experiences. However, none of these is a standard full form. I’ve listed one computer full form for you below, which is quite popular and meaningful.

C – Commonly
O – Operating
M – Machine
P – Particularly
U – Used in
T – Technology
E – Education and
R – Research

Computer Introduction

A computer cannot perform its functions alone. To perform a task, a computer requires the assistance of various devices and programs. These devices and programs are known as hardware and software, respectively. You will learn about these computer devices and programs in the next lessons. A typical computer looks something like this.

Various Computer Devices

The computer you see above is called a ‘desktop computer’. This type of computer is more popular today. In this photo, you’ll see several different devices that together make up a computer machine. Let’s briefly learn about these devices.

  1. System Unit
The system unit is a box containing the components necessary for a computer to function. The system unit is also called the CPU (Central Processing Unit). It contains the motherboard, processor, hard disk, and other components that make the computer work. It is also called the computer case.
  2. Monitor
A monitor is an output device that displays the results of instructions. It’s similar to a TV. LCDs and LEDs have replaced monitors today.
  3. KeyBord
A keyBord is an input device used to give instructions to a computer. It uses it to provide desired data and instructions to the computer. It contains various keys that transmit data and instructions to the computer. You can learn how to use a keyBord here.
  4. Mouse
The mouse is also an input device used to give instructions to the computer. We use it to select programs available on the computer. You can learn how to use a mouse here.
  5. Speakers
Speakers are output devices that help us hear sound from the computer. They are the ones that allow us to hear music from songs, movies, programs, and games.
  6. Printer
A printer is also an output device that displays computer-processed information onto paper. Information stored on paper is called “hard copy.” Conversely, information stored within the computer is called “soft copy.”

Characteristics of Computer

Computers have taken over most of the tasks we humans perform and have provided them with greater capabilities. All this is possible due to the unique features of this machine. That’s why we humans are making computers a part of our lives. Some of the most important features of computers are as follows.

Speed
Computers operate at extremely high speeds.
They can process millions of instructions in just one second.
The speed of their data processing is measured in microseconds (10-6), nanoseconds (10-9), and picoseconds (10-12).
Typically, the speed of one processor unit is tens of millions of instructions per second, or MIPS (Millions of Instructions Per Second).
This machine is designed to operate at such a high speed.

Accuracy
Computers operate on the GIGO (Garbage In Garbage Out) principle.
The results they produce are always error-free. Any errors in a result are due to human intervention and the instructions entered.
The accuracy of their results is much higher than that of human results.

Diligence
A computer is a tireless and hardworking machine.
It can perform its tasks smoothly and with the same accuracy without stopping, getting tired, or feeling bored.
It executes the first and last instructions with equal concentration, attention, effort, and accuracy.

Versatility
A computer is a multi-purpose machine.
It is capable of performing many useful tasks besides calculations.

It allows us to perform all the necessary tasks like typing, creating documents, reports, graphics, videos, emails, etc.

Automation
It is also an automatic machine.
It can complete many tasks without human intervention.
Automation is its greatest strength.
