6 Basic Components of Computer Network – Components of Network

Several types of components are required to establish a computer network.
These components of a computer network facilitate the exchange of data and communication between two different devices.

Components of a Computer Network

NIC – Full form of NIC in computer
NIC stands for Network Interface Card. It is a hardware component used to connect one computer to another over any type of network.
Its transfer rate is 10,100 to 1000 Mb/s.

There are two types of network interface cards:

Wired NIC (Component of Computer Network)Wireless NIC (Component of Computer Network)

It has an antenna to receive connections to wireless networks. It is used in laptop computers.

Hub – What is a Hub in a Network?

A hub is a hardware device that divides devices into networks. Whenever a computer makes a request to the network, the request travels through a cable and goes to the hub.
It has been used as a component of computer networks for a long time.

This hub broadcasts that request.

Then all devices check whether the request is for them or not, and if not, they discard the request.

But nowadays, hubs are not used because the processing performed by a hub consumes a lot of bandwidth, and its communication capacity is also limited.
Switches and routers are being used instead.

Switch – What is a switch in a network?

It is a hardware device used to broadcast information to a network, but a switch does not broadcast messages across the entire network like a hub.

It has more advanced features than a hub.

Connections are opened or closed through a switch. When a switch is turned on,
it allows information to flow through the connection, and when it is turned off, it stops the flow and breaks the connection.

Router – What is a router in a network

A router is a hardware device. It receives, analyzes, and forwards packets (units of data) from one component of a computer network to another.

It connects the LAN to the Internet.

Thus, a router forwards information from a routing table on a packet-by-pack basis. It has greater capabilities than hubs and switches.

Types of Router –

  • Wireless (Wi-Fi) router
  • B-router
  • Core router
  • Edge router
  • Virtual router

Types of Router –

Wireless (Wi-Fi) router

  • B-router
  • core router
  • edge router
  • virtual router

Wireless (Wi-Fi) router –

It provides Wi-Fi access to laptops, smartphones, and other devices with Wi-Fi network capabilities.

It also provides Ethernet routing to a small number of wireless devices.

B-router –

A B-router is a networking device that functions as both a bridge and a router.

Core router –

A core router functions similarly to a router in a computer network. However, it routes data within the network, not between networks.

Edge router –

Edge routers are used in MAN and WAN networks.

Virtual router –

A virtual router is a backup router used in VRRP (Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol).

Modem – What is a modem?

A modem is a hardware device. Its full name is modulator-de-modulator. It is an important component of a computer network. Modems are used to send and receive data from one computer network to another via telephone lines.

Whenever a message is sent via a telephone line, it travels in analog signals.

The telephone line is connected to a modem, and the computer network operates in digital mode.

Because when information is sent, the modulator converts the analog signal to a digital signal, and when it is received, the de-modulator converts the digital signal to an analog signal.

Modem speed is measured in bps and kbps. This is measured when the modem sends and receives data.
In the past, modem speeds were 2400 baud, 4800 baud, 9600 baud, 14.4k, 28.8k, and 33.6k.
But today, the fastest possible speed is 56 K (56,000 kbps).

Some of the names of computer modems are:

  • Onboard modem
  • External modem
  • Internal modem
  • Removable modem

Cable
Cable (wire) is a transmission media that is an important component of a computer network. It connects one or more computers and other devices.
It is used to transmit signals.

Three types of cables are used for data transmission:

  • Twisted pair cable
  • Fiber-optic cable
  • Coaxial cable
